The National Cancer Center estimates that approximately 10.1 million Americans live each da with a history of cancer. Amost 1.4 million Americans are expected to be diagnosed in 2006.

The Cancer Biology Center (formerly the Oncology Research Institute) has grown from 2 principal investigator to 5 principal investigators over the last two years. Areas of research include breast, prostate, cervical and ovarian cancers.

According to the American Cancer Society's "Cancer Facts and Figures 2006":

• Breast Cancer- estimated 213,000 new cases in 2006 with approximately 520 new cases in South Dakota
• Cervical Cancer- estimated 9710 new cases in 2006 with approximately less than 50 new cases in South Dakota
• Prostate Cancer- estimated 234,460 new cases in 2006 with approximately 940 new cases in South Dakota
• Ovarian Cancer- estimated 20,180 new cases with no estimate of the new cases for South Dakota
• Colon Cancer- estimated 106, 680 new cases with approximately 480 new cases for South Dakota
